The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium S'áxt' Hít Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital has added Matthew T. James to its medical staff as a physician assistant.

James will work in urgent care and the emergency room. He earned his physician assistant credential through the University of Washington School of Medicine/MEDEX program in Seattle.

Before joining SEARHC, James spent a year with the Chief Andrew Isaac Health Center in Fairbanks and did two locums stints with the Pine Ridge Lakota Indian Health Service Hospital in Pine Ridge, S.D. Prior to going to school to become a physician assistant, he was a paramedic with the New York City Fire Department and a firefighter/paramedic with Sheridan Fire Rescue in Sheridan, Wyo.

His medical interests include metabolic syndrome and Type 2 diabetes mellitus, as well as cross-cultural issues as they may affect medicine.
