SITKA - Are you tired of weight-loss diets that don't work? Are you a woman who wants to learn about a fun, effective way to improve your health and wellness, without being a slave to the scale? Then the WISE At Every Size program may be for you.
The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) WISEWOMAN program is sponsoring a series of free WISE At Every Size classes this May in Sitka. This particular offering will offer two sessions per class, so participants will be able to complete the program in three consecutive Saturdays. The classes take place from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, 9 and 16, at Harrigan Centennial Hall. The classes will be led by SEARHC WISE At Every Size Health Educator Marci Getz. The registration deadline is Thursday, April 30.
WISE At Every Size is a non-dieting approach to health and wellness. The classes are open to all adult women and they focus on listening to your body's messages of hunger and fullness, finding ways to get joyful movement and having a positive body image. Research has shown that this approach can reduce blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose readings, while improving overall fitness. Women who complete the program requirements will earn a $50 gift certificate.
Since the first round of classes started in January 2008, 175 women from several Southeast Alaska communities have completed or currently are enrolled in the WISE At Every Size program. One of those was Sharon McIndoo of Sitka and Angoon, who said WISE At Every Size "is a great program. It taught me about intuitive eating, and that every 'body' has different fitness levels, no matter what we look like on the outside. I learned to get joyful movement into my daily routine and I enjoy being a role model."
