HAINES - Spring is in the air and the first party of the year is on its way to the Haines Fairgrounds. The annual Spring Fling event represents the culmination of the Southeast Alaska State Fair's membership drive as well as the beginning of warmer seasons.
"It's really great after a long winter to get out and see everybody," said fair executive director Kelly Hostetler.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. on May 8 at Harriet Hall with a barbeque dinner followed by a performance by Whitehorse musician Nicole Edwards. Dinner is free for fair members and $5 for nonmembers and will feature grilled burgers, salad, dessert and Haines Brewery beer on tap. Concert admission is $5 for members and $10 for nonmembers.
Edwards is a performer of the folk rock persuasion whose stage shows range from intimate, acoustic sets to electrified, powerful displays. Her songwriting has made an impact on listeners across the United States and Canada.
"Unplugged, she's a quietly intense presence, with a textured voice and a folksy-bluesy approach to songwriting," writes Miche Genest of the Yukon News. "But fully wired and backed up by guitars and a drum kit, she rocks."
Fair membership is available online at www.seakfair.org or by calling (907) 766-2476.
