It read, "1st annual Gustavus Ladies Golf Open." There were no dates, times, or locations. Mary recently pointed out that she's not really sure how people figured out to show up but they did - and ten years later, the Ladies' Golf Open is a Gustavus tradition.
Each year Mary plans a series of events to liven up the weekend, all in order to support the Gustavus Public Library. During the game, community members bring libations out to the players on the course. In the evening participants share an awards dinner catered by Gustavus residents, and as a closing ceremony each guest is asked to bring a wacky gift to swap at the end of the evening.
The Gustavus Public Library uses one phrase repeatedly, "Volunteers are our foundation!" Community members literally keep the library open, as they volunteer six days a week to keep the check out desk running. Last year's Open brought $2000 to the library.
Mary wouldn't tell you that she helped start the library in Gustavus when she bought the first building to house it in 1981. Nor would she tell you her book Yukon Re-run, sits proudly on our library shelves. But her contributions have been important and lasting.
This year, Mary is planning the 10th annual Ladies Golf Open. It will take place June 21 at the Mt. Fairweather Golf Course in Gustavus from 10:00 a.m. until people feel like leaving. It's a great way to get out of town, support our community, and have some fun.
For more information, contact Mary Hervin, P.O. Box 133 Gustavus, AK 99826, or call 907-697-8560 or the library at 907-697-2350. RSVP by June 1.
