CHOICE program hosts Poetry Slam

Do you like poetry off the page? Do you like it on a stage? Then you might like Green Eggs and Slam!

The JDHS Choice program is sponsoring a poetry slam Sunday, April 17, 7-9pm in the JDHS auditorium. This will be a competition with prizes awarded to the winner. Green Eggs and Slam is a free event, open to performers and gawkers of all ages.

Poets who want to compete should submit an original poem that is no more than three minutes in length to by April 14.

The junior class of CHOICE, a program for at-risk students at JDHS, is planning, promoting, and hosting the poetry slam for their annual service learning project. Last year they put on a fashion show. The specific goals of the Green Eggs and Slam event are to bring multiple generations together, give teenagers a positive form of entertainment, and to combat racism.

The CHOICE juniors found adult volunteers from the community to mentor them. One of the mentors is Michael Christenson, runner-up of the 2004 Dead Poet Slam in Anchorage.
