Floyd Dryden Essay: All people should have the same rights

Everyone is unique and different in their own way. All children are told over and over to accept everyone. Why do we deny gays the rights heterosexual people have? For gays to adopt is a very long, expensive process. Some homosexual people have a very hard time adopting children. Gay marriage is not banned in only seven places in the U.S. All other places have banned gay marriage. I believe that gay marriage should be legal everywhere and adoption should have the same process it would for anyone else.

If gays and lesbians were able to marry, they'd be accepted in the community better over time. One out of ten people are homosexual. Many experts are finding that your sexuality might be something you are born with, just like some of us are born with blue eyes or brown hair. You can't change it. You can try with fancy contacts and hair dyes, but you'll always really have blue eyes and brunette hair. Same with homosexuality. They cannot change it; it's usually something they did not choose. You can try your best to change them, but that's ridiculous. Why not just accept people - why not just let everyone be happy?

Many religions are against homosexuality. The Christian Bible does state in Lev 18:22-23, "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination." And in Lev 20:13: "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death." But the Bible also states that God loves everyone and anyone who believes He is our savior will be sent to heaven and whomever admits their sins before Him will be given eternal life. The Christian Bible states that impure thoughts about the same sex is not sinful, but acting upon these desires is the sinful factor. But I see no difference between the two. Isn't happiness needed to fulfill a successful life?

A study showed that homosexual people were no worse or better parents than heterosexuals. Most gay people come from straight parents, and usually gays raise straight children. Their influence generally matters very little. Every human being is capable of love. And anyone willing to care for a child in need, deserves that right. There is no reason for it to be so difficult. Yes, the child is a human, but do you truly believe the child will be at all different from the other children?

A marriage is a legal contract between two people, joining them for life or until divorce. There is nothing that states it must be between a man and a woman. I think anyone who is in love should be allowed to marry. I see no cause for it to be banned. If it made one out of ten people a little bit happier, why not? Aren't we all here to help and support each other? In addition, why would we ever want to make anyone feel outcast? People who treat gays at all differently are somewhat immature. I see no reason why a grown adult should still stare or whisper about anyone who's a bit different than them or even just cast them out and defy them their rights as people.
