24th Annual Tenakee Springs Fireman's Ball, March 26. Annual fundraiser for Tenakee Volunteer Fire Department will feature a spaghetti dinner, refreshments, door prizes, live music, dancing, and more. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children 6-12, and free for children 5 and under. The ferry departs Juneau on Thursday, March 25 at 7 a.m. and arrives in Tenakee at 11:30 a.m. The return ferry to Juneau leaves Tenakee on Saturday, March 27 at 3:45 p.m. and arrives in Juneau at 8:15 p.m. Details: Karen Crandall, 907-586-5913 or 907-736-2301; or Acting Fire Chief Shelly Wilson, 907-736-2211 (the Fire Hall).

Skagway's Buckwheat Ski Classic, March 27. 50K, 25K and 10K cross country ski races, as well as a 5K kids race. Pre-and post-race events in Skagway include a fabulous awards banquet and dance at the historic Eagles Hall. The race is a fund-raiser for the Skagway Ski Club and traditionally hosts more than 200 participants from Alaska, the Yukon and elsewhere. Details: (907) 983-2854.

Alaska Hummingbird Festival, dates TBA, Ketchikan. This festival celebrates the return of the migratory hummingbird. Bird hikes, art shows and children's activities are included. Details: (907) 228-6220.

Stikine River Birding Festival, April 30-May 2, Wrangell. In celebration of spring migration, this festival includes art classes, bird walks, events for youth and guest speakers. Details: (800) 367-9745 or visitor@wrangellalaska.org.
