24th Annual Tenakee Springs Fireman's Ball, March 26. Annual fundraiser for Tenakee Volunteer Fire Department will feature a spaghetti dinner, refreshments, door prizes, live music, dancing, and more. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children 6-12, and free for children 5 and under. Skagway's Buckwheat Ski Classic, March 27. 50K, 25K and 10K cross country ski races, as well as a 5K kids race. Pre-and post-race events in Skagway include a fabulous awards banquet and dance at the historic Eagles Hall. The race is a fund-raiser for the Skagway Ski Club and traditionally hosts more than 200 participants from Alaska, the Yukon and elsewhere. Details: (907) 983-2854.

Alaska Hummingbird Festival, dates TBA, Ketchikan. This festival celebrates the return of the migratory hummingbird. Bird hikes, art shows and children's activities are included. Details: (907) 228-6220.
