Dec. 10 is observed across the world as Human Rights Day. It honors the United Nations General Assembly's adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on 10 December 1943. Juneau Human Rights essay contest

Dec. 10 is observed across the world as Human Rights Day. It honors the United Nations General Assembly's adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on 10 December 1943. To mark this important date and in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Juneau Human Rights Commission presents the JHR Essay Contest, open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in Juneau.

The essays should be 500 words or less answering the following question: "What role does human rights play in your life?"

The deadline is 4 p.m. March 22, 2013.

Winners of each grade level will be announced April 26, 2013 and awarded $100. Of all the entries, one will be chosen for publication in the Juneau Empire.
