Trapping animals for fur should be banned

Editor's note: This is part of a series of essays written by Floyd Dryden eighth grade students in Samantha Davis' class.

Did you know that it takes 125 ermines to make just one fur jacket? Ermines are small weasels that live mostly in Alaska. They are wild. They shouldn't be trapped to make jackets. Every animal deserves to be free, that's why trapping animals for their fur should be banned.

Animals are like humans. They just cannot talk like we can. They show emotion like we do though. Trapping animals for fur is wrong because you are killing and torturing animals that don't deserve it. 24 million out of 31 million animals killed on fur farms are mink. They are kept in cages that are smaller than their bodies. The cages are 10 inches wide and 24 inches long. When animals are trapped, the trappers do not want the fur to be damaged, so they find the most terrible ways to kill the animals. For example, the most common way to kill the animals is electrocution, but they don't always die. They are sometimes even skinned alive.

I went to Misterpoll.com and found a poll that asked, "Do you think a person should be allowed to wear endangered animal fur?" Only 18 people answered, but the results were 16% said yes, 72% said no, 5% said maybe and the other 5% said it depends on the animal. Not only are animals tortured for their fur, it is a waste of our money.

Would you spend over two thousand dollars on a jacket? Animal fur is not cheap. Nordstrom, a clothing store sells Mink fur coats for $1995. Leather gloves could be up to $68. I asked Marie Petersen, a classmate at Floyd Dryden Middle School if she thinks animal fur is a waste of money. She said, "Yes. Fake fur is cheaper and you don't have to kill all the animals for it." Why would you want to spend that much money on a jacket you probably won't wear too often, when you can just get faux fur?

We do not need real animal fur. We can have alternatives like faux fur. Faux is French for "not real". It is false fur. No animals need to be killed to wear faux fur, and it is much cheaper and just as stylish. You could get a faux fur jacket for less than one hundred dollars in some places. Spending your money on something pointless is a stupid move. You could get more resourceful things for two thousand dollars. Don't waste your money on real fur jackets.

Animals being trapped for their fur is wrong and should really stop. If you think about all of these reasons not to wear real fur, like price, animals being tortured, and the fact that we don't need it, you should realize real fur is useless and people are murdering animals for you.

Do you want to be skinned? Maybe even alive? I didn't think so. Let animals live. Stop trapping animals for their fur. If you wear animal fur, you clearly don't understand what animals go through.
