League of Women Voters Alaska receives award

JUNEAU - The League of Women Voters Alaska has received a prestigious award grant from the Alaska Humanities Forum and National Endowment for the Humanities.

This grant of $7,000 will assist to put in place "The Peratrovich Legacy," wherein the League will distribute the film "For the Rights of All: Ending Jim Crow in Alaska" to schools, libraries and universities throughout Juneau and Southeast Alaska. A companion teaching guideline will accompany the film to assist teachers, librarians, community leaders and organization to share the message of equality and anti-discrimination for all Alaskans.

The teaching film and guideline depicts the historic civil rights work of Elizabeth and Roy Peratrovich two decades before the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s.

As the project expands, the League will consider extension of the project to other regions of Alaska.

The working core within the League consists of Marie Olson, Marjorie Menzi, Cheryl Jebe, George Brown and carolyn Brown (project director).
