Ketchikan man guilty of assaulting Coast Guardsman

Jon William Munhoven, a 56-year-old Ketchikan man, has been found guilty of assaulting a federal officer after he kicked a Coast Guardsman in the face during a September 2013 arrest.

According to accounts of the event, Coast Guardsmen from Ketchikan responded Sept. 2 to a call for help from a mariner who reported he had been assaulted on his boat. The mariner had a bloody nose and said he was hit by Munhoven.

When the Coast Guardsmen arrived, Munhoven was handcuffed and taken aboard the Coast Guard boat. Munhoven resisted arrest and intentionally kicked one of the Coast Guard boarding team in the face.

A jury at the U.S. District Court in Juneau found Munhoven guilty on Tuesday.

Munhoven is scheduled to be sentenced June 23 in Juneau. He faces up to 20 years in jail, a fine of $250,000 and three years of supervised release.
