The Petersburg sales tax committee has unofficially recommended that the Petersburg borough assembly consider taxing tobacco products.
The recommendation was first reported by the Petersburg Pilot's Kyle Clayton.
The sales tax committee was created to review the Petersburg borough's sales tax code with an eye toward increasing revenue.
The city of Bethel implemented a tobacco tax in March last year, generating more than $25,000 per month in revenue. The Petersburg borough has about half the population of Bethel.
The sales tax committee is expected to present its recommendations to the borough assembly later this month.
