Canoe capsizes with two people near Kake

KAKE - One person died after a canoe capsized a half of mile from Kake last week.

The Coast Guard received a report Feb. 23 of a person missing from a capsized canoe less than a half mile southwest of Kake. A second person onboard the canoe when it capsized was able to swim to shore and report the incident to the Kake Police Department. A Coast Guard rescue helicopter crew was diverted from a training mission at Air Station Sitka to conduct a search for the missing person.

An additional helicopter crew, which was in Juneau at the time of the incident, was launched shortly thereafter.

Before the second helicopter crew arrived on scene, a good Samaritan located the missing person, who was then transferred to the Kake clinic and was declared deceased at 3:40 p.m. that day. The two people aboard the vessel were reportedly not wearing flotation devices.
