Juneau high school students prepare for all-academic competition

Next week, 140 high school students representing 12 high schools from across the state will converge in Anchorage in hopes of out-smarting their competitors at the 32nd Annual Alaska Academic Decathlon, including 13 Juneau students as well as students from Craig and Ketchikan.

Taking place at the Hilton Anchorage Hotel from Feb. 22 – 25, the Academic Decathlon is an opportunity for high school students to showcase their academic knowledge in an individual and team competition. Each student competes in 10 events, including art, economics, essay, interview, language and literature, math, music, science, social science and speech. On Friday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. students will participate in the Super Quiz, a team competition featuring a relay of students working to answer the most questions correctly in three electrifying rounds. The Super Quiz is the Academic Decathlon’s only public event.

Each nine-member team consists of students from all learning levels at their respective high school, including honor students (3.75-4.0 GPA), the scholastic division (3.0-3.74 GPA) and the varsity division (0.0-2.99 GPA).

All teams must compete in local, regional and statewide competitions in order to advance to the national finals. The winning team from the Alaska Academic Decathlon will compete in the U.S. Academic Decathlon, held in Madison, Wisconsin, April 20 – 22, 2017.
