Editor's note: This is part of a series of essays written by Floyd Dryden eighth grade students in Samantha Davis' class, who selected any topic they felt strongly about.
Have you ever thought about abortion? In this essay you will find the answers to questions you've been asking. Are you against it or for it? Whether to keep a child or not should be your choice.
If you get pregnant because of rape or incest, you should have the choice of keeping the child or not. Sixteen thousand women have abortions every year because of these abuses. These victims get abortions because they can't bear the thought of giving birth to the child of their attacker. Not only do pro-choice laws help victims of rape or incest, but also they help women that feel they are too young to have a child.
You should have the choice of abortion if you feel you are too young to have a child. More then one million teens become pregnant and 42 percent of them get abortions. A full quarter of abortions performed in this country are on teens of the ages fifteen to nineteen. Then the teens that are under the age of fifteen, accounts for 1 percent of abortions in the US. Not only do pro-choice laws help women that are too young to have a child, but also they help women with bad health.
If you feel like you shouldn't have a child because of your health, you should have the right to have an abortion. Tens of thousands of women with severe diseases that can be deadly have availability to legal abortion. Women with severe diseases can leave a child stricken. With women having this choice available to them, it has helped avert serious medical complications that could have resulted from childbirth. Not only will the freedom of choice help women with bad health, but also it could help prevent them from having an unhealthy child.
If you get pregnant you should have the choice of abortion. We should keep abortion legal to help women with bad health, victims of rape, victims of incest and young women. Why be selfish? It's their body not yours. Let them do what they want with their body.
