JUNEAU - After twelve rounds of daunting words, (e.g. gregarious, Sasquatch, daffodil, apostrophe, sporadic and hacienda), Jahbril Flores emerged as the 2009 Juneau School District Spelling Bee champion.
Demaris Oxman placed second in the competition, falling on the word pizzeria.
The spelling bee was open to third through fifth grade students from Juneau schools. The winners from each school were:
Auke Bay: Glen Taggart, fifth; Soren Thompson, fifth
Dzantik'i Heeni: David Elliott, eighth; Kevin Sigler, eighth.
Floyd Dryden: Jahbril Flores, eighth; Amanda Stevenson, sixth.
Gastineau: Aidan Seid, fourth; Tyler Burns, fifth.
Glacier Valley: Maliquinn Beal, fifth, Austin Damitio, fifth.
Harborview: Treyson Ramos, fifth; Ian Scholl, fourth.
Mendenhall River: Bryan Conrad, fifth; Christian English, fourth.
Montessori: Corwin Kelly, eighth; Demaris Oxman, sixth.
Riverbend: Calista Ferguson, third; Paris Russel, fourth.
Jahbril will compete in the Anchorage Daily News/Alaska State Spelling Bee on March 4 in Anchorage. All Juneau wishes him well as he tries to reach the national spelling bee.
Dzantik'i Heeni hosted this year's district bee. Retired middle school teacher Didi Ryall volunteered as the pronouncer, and Cathy Boutin, Kirstie Dye, and Liz Agnew acted as judges. Tom Boutin also assisted with the event.
