JUNEAU - The Orpheus Project is bringing to Juneau a modern musical retelling of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers in a mostly local-talent production of “West Side Story.”
This enduring tale of love and war is set in the upper west side of Manhattan in the mid-1950s. “There’s gonna be a rumble” when an established hoodlum gang and fresh-off-the-boat immigrants claim the same stretch of scrappy street, but like a star shining above the rabble, an unlikely love story reminds us of our capacity to overcome fear and hate with empathy and understanding.
Thirty-two musicians in the Amalga Chamber Orchestra will be performing the original Broadway orchestration and 28 cast members will act, sing and dance the original choreography realized by Hali Duran and bring this story to life on the Juneau-Douglas High School stage.
Showings are Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, Feb. 26 at 3 p.m.; Friday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m.
The Orpheus Project will hold a post-show dialogue with directors and cast after the Sunday, Feb. 26 performance.
Tickets available at Hearthside Books, the Juneau Arts and Culture Center, and at OrpheusProject.org.
