More than 19,000 Alaskans enroll for 2017 health care through Health Insurance Marketplace

Open Enrollment through the Affordable Care Act closed January 31, 2017, with 19,145 Alaskans signed up for healthcare coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace, the Alaska Primary Care Association announced in a press release.

Additionally, according to the State of Alaska, more than 28,000 Alaskans have been covered through Medicaid Expansion, since Gov. Walker expanded Medicaid effective September 1, 2015.

With one issuer participating in Alaska’s Marketplace this year, another rate increase, and federal administration changes, many Alaskans had questions about their coverage options this year, the release said.

Enrollment Assisters working in community health centers and community settings across the state provided free local help to get the facts out and answer questions.

Jessie Menkens, who manages the Navigator Program at the Alaska Primary Care Association added, “This enrollment period was rather challenging for Alaskans who might be interested in enrolling. Given the change in administration and conversation around ACA repeal, some residents didn’t understand they could still enroll, or they mistakenly believed the law changed. The increase in lives covered through Medicaid Expansion in Alaska combined with steady enrollment through healthcare.gov shows Alaskans need access to affordable health care.”
