Letters to the editor

Thanks you very much for your “Letter from the Editor” in the February 1-7, 2017 issue of Capital City Weekly. I appreciate all you do to present what we all love in Southeastern Alaska. I look forward to each week’s issue. I also appreciate you speaking out about America’s values. I want very much for us Americans to think of ourselves as good people. I have always considered us so. But we must act that way when times are challenging. For example, the question is not whether torture is effective or ineffective; torture is simply wrong. Another example; kindness and compassion are good values. We must speak up to our congressional delegation, to the press, and to friends that might not agree with us. In the present environment, silence is not a virtue.

Thank you for your heartfelt letter in the Feb. 1 Capital City Weekly. Living our professed values as individuals and as a country is, of course, essential to our identity. But let me put in a good word for one of the United States’ foundational principles—the rule of law. In the heat of emotion we sometimes forget that our Constitution specifies the responsibilities of the three branches of government. These days, some in Washington, DC forget, for example, that the judicial branch has final say over the executive branch. While we may support one party over another, we all need to remember that none should be above the rule of law and the design of our constitution.
