Thirty-six Alaskan sites are set up for a free tax preparation service available until April 17 through the AARP Foundation.
The Tax-Aide program is designed to prepare basic tax returns for most low and middle income taxpayers, with an emphasis on senior citizens and disabled taxpayers. Sites are staffed by volunteers trained by the Internal Revenue Service to help prepare basic tax returns.
Sites in Sitka include the University of Alaska Southeast (by appointment, 747-4273) and the Swan Lake Senior Center (noon-4:30 p.m. Wednesdays, 747-8617).
In Ketchikan, the program is offered at Tongass Federal Credit Union (11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays, 225-6351), the Rendezvous Senior Center (10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays, 247-1961) and the Ketchikan Parks and Recreation Center (6-8 p.m. Tuesdays, 225-9579).
In Metlakatla, the Tongass Federal Credit Union will offer the program (by appointment, 886-5975).
Juneau sites include the Mendenhall Library (12:30-4 p.m. Saturdays or by appointment, 789-1821), the Gruening Park Recreation Center (4-7 p.m. Thursdays, 780-6666) and the Mountain View Senior Center (8-11 a.m. Fridays, 789-1821).
In Wrangell, the program is offered at the Nolan Center (1-5 p.m. Saturdays, 874-3699).
