Governor Sarah Palin along with Revenue Commissioner Pat Galvin, Attorney General Talis Colberg and Office of Management and Budget Director Karen Rehfeld, announce that the State of Alaska has filed an amicus, or "friend of the court," brief supporting the award of punitive damages against Exxon Mobil stemming from the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. The announcement was part of a meeting with reporters Jan. 29. "Our amicus brief focused on basically establishing that we think maritime law does allow punitive damages and secondly that the punitive damages award is not in contradiction to the clean water act which is one of the common arguments against it," said Attorney General Talis Colberg.
