Upcoming basketball events include Hoops for Charity in Juneau Feb. 5-8

JUNEAU - Hoops for Charity will hold its second annual basketball tournament in Juneau Feb. 5-8. The organization formed last year when volunteers combined forces to host their first tournament. All proceeds went to the Catholic Community Services.

This year, proceeds will go to Interact, a high school club focusing on raising awareness and support for community issues like homelessness. Interact has decided to dedicate all the funds from the tournament to the AWARE shelter.

Games begin on Thursday, Feb. 5 and run through Sunday, Feb. 8. Men's division games will be held at Thunder Mountain High School and games in the women's division will be held at Floyd Dryden Middle School.

The men's games will kick off Thursday at 6:00 p.m. with Zephyr vs. Napa. Delta-Western will play Angoon at 7:15 followed by Haines vs. Specs In the City at 8:30 and Import Audio vs. Hoonah at 9:45. The tournament will continue on Friday at 7:15 p.m. Saturday's games will begin at 9:00 a.m. and the championship game for the men's division will be held on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

The women's division will begin Thursday at 7:00 p.m. when the Miramontes take on Sealaska, followed by Glacier Optical Sky vs. Chilkat Valley Arts at 8:45. Nizich Dental will join the tournament on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Hamey Financial will play the winner of game two at 7:15. Games begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, and the championship game will be on Sunday at 9:00 a.m.

In lieu of a cash donation for admission to the games, a non-perishable food item, or items, will be accepted and donated to the Food Bank. Anyone wishing to donate to this charitable fundraiser may contact Cliff Tagaban at 523-1971 or ctagaban@yahoo.com.

Klukwan Tournament

For the first time in the 28 years of the tournament's history, the Dick Hotch Annual Basketball Tournament will be held in Klukwan.The tournament has previously been held in Haines, but the new Klukwan gym will allow the games to return home to the village where Dick Hotch once inspired others on and off the court. The tournament will be held Feb. 12-15, and there will be transportation available from Haines to Klukwan. Gold Medal Bracket Drawing

Tune in to Capital Chat on KINY Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 10:30 a.m for the live drawing of the 2009 Gold Medal Basketball brackets. This will determine who will face off in the first matches of the tournament.
