JUNEAU - Alaska's fifth annual College Goal Sunday event will take place Sunday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. at the University of Alaska Southeast Student Recreation Center in Auke Bay off Back Loop Road.
Traditionally offered a week or two after Super Bowl Sunday, College Goal SundaySM is a national program designed to help students clear the financial hurdles to higher education, particularly low-income and first-generation college goers.
This year, 24 sites will be participating in the one-day event at which Alaska's financial aid professionals join other volunteers in participating communities across the state. They give line-by-line assistance to families and students as they fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the universally required financial aid application.
"The FAFSA is the only way for students to access federal and most state financial support, including grants, scholarships and work-study opportunities" said Teri LaGrand, counselor at Unalaska High School. "However, completing the form correctly with detailed income, tax, and other information can be a difficult task."
The 2009 Alaska College Goal Sunday statewide sites include Juneau, Ketchikan and Sitka.
