KETCHIKAN - Students enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to read away their late fines at the Ketchikan Public Library. Every 15 minutes of reading logged at the children's library will credit $1 toward a student's balance.
The library also offers a reading program for children ages 5 and under encouraging families to visit kid-friendly sites around town. The Ketchikan Passport for Kids program offers participants a booklet in which families can receive stamps at suggested locations. Stamps may be turned in each month at the children's library or at Community Connections Early Learning Program, 111 Stedman St., for a chance to win a gift certificate from children's consignment store Silly Munchkins.
Two out-of-town authors will present at the library during the month of February. Barrow author and National Book Award nominee Debby Dahl Edwardson will speak at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 8. She is the author of "Whale Snow," "Blessings Bead" and "My Name Is Not Easy." Montana author Sneed Collard III will speak at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 29 about his many outdoor adventures. Sneed's fiction and nonfiction titles include "Pocket Babies and Other Amazing Marsupials," "Science Warriors: The Battle Against Invasive Species (Scientists in the Field)," "Reign of the Sea Dragons" and "The Governor's Dog Is Missing (Slate Stephens Mysteries)."
