Special community events for National Heart Month

• Friday, Feb. 1, 2008 - The Litehouse Cafeteria at the SEARHC Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital will serve special breakfast and lunch menus featuring heart-healthy whole grains, vegetables and salmon.

• Friday, Feb. 1, 2008 - WISEWOMAN staff will host a display about heart health all day in the lobby of the SEARHC Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital.

• All of February - WISEWOMAN staff will offer incentives to women who quit smoking, join a gym or participate in any SEARHC fitness or nutrition activities.

• Friday, Feb. 1, 2008 - WISEWOMAN staff will host a display about heart health all day in the lobby of the SEARHC Ethel Lund Medical Center. Wear Red Day pins and door prizes are available for those who wear red and who stop by to register at the display.

• Friday, Feb. 1, 2008 - WISEWOMAN staff will host a display about heart health all day in the lobby of the SEARHC Haines Health Center. Wear Red Day pins and door prizes are available for those who wear red and who stop by to register at the display.

• All February - WISEWOMAN staff will offer incentives to women who quit smoking, join a gym or participate in community fitness or nutrition activities.

KLAWOCK/PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND (contact Brenda Isaacs, 755-4983)

• Friday, Feb. 1, 2008 - "Paint the Town Red" today! Community members are encouraged to wear red to show support for women with heart disease. The WISEWOMAN program will host Wear Red Day initiatives at the SEARHC Alicia Roberts Medical Center. Wear red to the Alicia Roberts Medical Center and enter your name for a variety of door prizes. Red balloon bouquets will be delivered to various locations in Craig and Klawock.

KAKE (contact Georgie Reese, 785-3260)

• Friday, Feb. 1, 2008 - Staff will have a lobby display about healthy hearts all day in the lobby of the SEARHC Kake Health Center.

• Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008 - A Wear Red Day/Valentine's Day celebration takes place from 1-4 p.m. at the SEARHC Kake Wellness Building (next to the Boys & Girls Club), there will be free blood pressure checks, information about heart health, a contest for the best "Wear Red" clothing (with prizes), a chili cook-off with prizes for those who bring in the healthiest and tastiest chili to share, a '50s and '60s dance starting at 3 p.m., and a kick-off celebration and registration for the 10,000-step program that will be Kake's first-quarter community exercise program. Door prizes will be given.

ANGOON (contact Doreen McCluskey, 788-4637)

• Friday, Feb. 1, 2008 - National Wear Red Day activities include a heart-health lobby display in the SEARHC Angoon Health Clinic and a gathering at night at the clinic for WISEWOMAN participants to discuss "What You Need to Know about High Blood Pressure, Salt and Sodium." Community Health Practitioner Daphne Demmert will take blood pressures for women who don't know their numbers.

• Late January and February - WISEWOMAN staff at all six locations will offer WISE At Every Size classes starting in late January or February, depending on the location. WISE At Every Size is a program that emphasizes healthy eating, physical activity and body acceptance, while shifting the focus to overall health and away from dieting.
