‘Alaskan of the Week’

Sen. Dan Sullivan has begun a program called the “Alaskan of the Week.” The first Alaska resident he recognized, Jan. 9, was Juneau writer and UAS professor Ernestine Hayes.

“For the kickoff... I think it’s appropriate to recognize a storyteller,” Sullivan said in a presentation available on YouTube. “Narratives keep the people in my state connected with one another. They keep history and culture alive.”

Hayes, a member of the Tlingit Kaagwaantaan clan and the author of “Blonde Indian: An Alaska Native Memoir” and “The Tao of Raven,” will be recognized as the new Alaska State Writer Laureate at the Governor’s Awards for the Arts Jan. 26.
