OUTDOORS Capital City Weekly About 40 employees of the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) office in Juneau celebrated Earth Day on April 22 by focusing on the harm posed by single-use plastic bags. They picked up those old plastic bags and other trash near the DEC building. Volunteers amassed more than 450 pounds of garbage and recyclables in areas around Willoughby and Capitol Avenues and Whittier Street. Following the cleanup, DEC Commissioner Larry Hartig spoke about the importance of working with communities and of controlling pollution in Alaska. Staff also held a reuseable bag contest and a presented action items to help prevent the accumulation of trash.
