OUTDOORS Capital City Weekly A white-tailed ptarmigan seen moseying along the Airport Dike Trail in Juneau. The birds are an uncommon sighting in Southeast Alaska. Their preferred habitat is upland tundra, especially on mountain ridges. The white-tailed ptarmigan is a close relative of Alaska's state bird, the willow ptarmigan.
