This summer at a new Hoonah housing development, a brown bear tried to turn over a camper. There was a man inside. He called police, who shot the bear.

A seminal study of the school-based mentoring program of Big Brothers Big Sisters, the largest youth mentoring organization in Alaska and the United States, shows that students with a "Big Brother" or "Big Sister" have better academic performance, attitudes, and behaviors over the course of a school year than students who did not have a Big Brother or Big Sister.

What was once a dilapidated cannery just outside Hoonah, is now a hot spot for tourism. The Icy Strait Point Cannery, which was long ago a productive salmon cannery, reopened in 2004, with a modern mission.
