With boats put away for the winter and limited fishing opportunities, the quiet winter beaches are not visited much. However, a bonfire with the kids, or a stroll exploring the low tide can be just as much fun in January as in June. A person merely needs to dress for the occasion. In the Juneau area, the public road ends at the head of Echo Cove.

Alaska's salmon fishery is on track to being recertified as sustainable under the Marine Stewardship Council standards for sustainably-managed fisheries, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game recently announced. The State of Alaska has offered its assistance to the MSC in an effort to streamline the process for fisheries seeking recertification.

The new Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program instructional DVD, Fishing Vessel Stability: Operational Practices, seeks to educate fishermen about the importance of understanding and following stability guidelines unique to their individual vessel.
